At 06:30 pm, they started to return back to their home from their orchard. They reached at the bridge of famous Nallah Raimbara (Stream) where they was stopped by Indian forces. Security forces was demanding for their Identity cards. A few minutes after this, the mobile phone of Neolofar rang up. It was Shakeel Ahmad (Neolofar's Husband and Aasiya's Brother). Neolofar told him that they has been stopped by armed forces and they are demanding their I cards. And the call was disconnected. Shakeel Ahmad called again but the phone was now switched off. So Shakeel went there on his bike but found nobody there nor his wife and sister and neither the security forces. He called the phone again and again but it was switched off. He searched here and there but found nothing. So at 09:00 pm he went to Police Station Shopian to lodge an FIR (first information report) that his wife and sister is missing. A police party along with Shakeel Ahmad went in search of both the ladies and their search continued till midnight but there was no information of both ladies. So the Police party came back and Shakeel Ahmad was dropped at his home.
Next Morning at 7:00 am (30/05/2009) Police again took Shakeel Ahmad with them and went in search and finally they found the dead body of Neolofar (Shakeel's wife) near CRPF camp with torn clothes. They took the dead body and started to search there for Aasiya and she was also found 1 km apart from the dead body of Neolofar. Her clothes were torn out and her nose was bleeding. Blood was out coming out from her forehead, it was looking that she had been hit on forehead by some sharp edged tool. Shakeel Ahmad took out his shirt to wrap the dead body of his sister whose frock was torn out. The Police took the dead bodies to hospital.
As the news about the incident spread, People thronged to District Hospital Shopian. Where a team of 3 Doctors including Dr Bilquees & Dr Hilal said that the both ladies have been raped and killed and the cause of death was several sex torture.The Post-mortem was done in presence of the relatives of the victims in District Hospital, Shopian. But later a Police Constable entered the post-mortem room and told the doctors that in case rape had been committed, they should hand over the bodies immediately to the family as the situation in the town had become explosive. Later, the same Police constable entered the room and conveyed the senior police officials' message for the doctors that their report should be negative. After hearing this Zahoor Ahmad and relatives ran out shouting to inform the people about it after which violence broke out in the town And Doctors changed their statement and said that both ladies have drowned. People started protesting and demanded a new Post-Mortem. So the District Commissioner Shopian Mohammad Ramzan Thoker called for a Doctors team from nearest District Pulwama.
After Half an hour Doctors team reached District Hospital Shopian under the supervision of Dr Nighat (Gynaecologist) and they confirmed the cause of death as rape and murder.
Statement of Dr Nighat (Gynaecologist) at the lawn of District Hospital Shopian, " What was done to these women even animals could not have done this "
After hearing this Deputy Commissioner Shopian Mohd Ramzan Thoker said, " These are the common incidents in Kashmir, there is no need to make such hue n cry "
Hearing this people shouted, " Aasiya ka kaatil kaun - bharti fauj aur kaun (Who are the killers of Aasiya - the indian armed forces "
And the Police started shelling on people.
People took the dead bodies and started throwing stones on Hospital building, District Commissioner ran away from the incident. Police declared curfew.
People defied curfew and started to stage protests until the killers of both ladies were booked.
Protests started to march along the streets of Shopian and stones were thrown at DC Office, Court Complex, Tehsil Office and at other government offices.
Then bodies were taken to their home at Bongam Shopian. And at 04:00 pm their funeral prayer (Nimaz-e-jinaza) was offered at Idd-Gah Shopian. Thousands joined their funeral prayers.
On 1st May 2009 - SANA news published the incident and also confirmed it as rape and murder along with a eye witness.
People continued protests defying curfew for three days and after three days a committee has been framed by locals under the supervision of Mr Mohd Shafi Khan to fight for the justice and the committee was named as Majlis-e-Masharawat to launch an agitation against the killing and rape of the two ladies.
Majlis-e-Masharawat urged for complete strike till the murders were booked.
The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mr Omar Abdullah keep changing his statements:
On The Evening of May 30, CM said that the both women were drowned.
On May 31; CM said he has been informed wrongly, The women has been died due to alleged rape and murder and the killers will be punished for this.
On May 01; CM appointed 1 man commission to find the reality. It was named as Jan Commission.
On June 1, Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani called for strike and peaceful protest against the incident. A complete shutdown was observed throughout Jammu and Kashmir with all government offices, shops, schools, banks remained closed. Protest was observed in Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam, Bandipora, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam.
Protestors restored to stone pelting after police and Paramilitary Troops fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd injuring over more than two dozen people. In Shopian, house of the Local legislator was damaged by mobs. At evening Hurriyat Conference (G), chairman, Syed Ali Geelani renewed the strike call for next two days. And after 2 days the strike has been extended.
Till 11 days whole valley remained crippled. Protests took place daily at various places of the valley and Police used brute force on unarmed protesters.
On 6th June, Jan Commission headed by Muzaffar Jan (retired Justice) established his office in Circuit House Shopian and starts its functioning.
On 7th June, an eye witness came to Jan Commission who said that he saw some policemen holding the two women and they were pushed to the Police jeep by the police men. On the same days, nomads (bakerwal) who was present on the bank of the same stream on that night, said that around 3:00 am they saw A Police Vehicle throwing something into the stream, as it was night so we didn't saw what they threw there.
On 8th June, Jan Commission ordered police to handover a complete report about the duty schedule and leave schedule of the policemen stationed in various pickets around the place where from the two women disappeared.
On 9th June, Jan Commission summoned all the doctors of both the teams who conducted post-mortem of the victims and recorded their statements in detail. Health officials submitted their report. Reports ruled out death of the victims due to drowning or consuming poison.The report said unmarried girl Aasiya died due to violent sexual assaults. The assaults were so violent that she sustained severe multiple injuries, resulting in bleeding of various body parts and subsequent death while Neolofar died of neurogenic shock. High Court ordered that Superintendent of Police Javeed Ahmad has forced the 1st team of Doctors to change their statements and ordered for suspension of SP and the three doctors that examined the bodies first.
On June 10; Police finally submitted FIR but for murder only and not for rape.
On 21st June, Jan Commission submitted its report to Chief Minister
On 22nd June, Government suspended Superintendent of Police Javid Ahmad Mattoo, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rohit Baskotra, Inspector Shafeeq Ahmad and Sub Inspector Ghazi Abdul Kareem.
After this the whole case turned now it was Confirmed that the two ladies were raped and killed by the police officers and the people was waiting for justice. Post mortem report from Forensic Laboratory also confirmed Rape and Murder.
BUT HERE CHANGED THE CASE AND AUTHORITIES STARTED TO HUSH UP.
The nomads ran away from that place. The eye witness were threathned. The SOG men came to Shakeel Ahmad and offered him money but he refused. More than a hundred protesters were injured during police firing. Police reported the FIR but only for murder and accused Shakeel Ahmad Under Fake case that he has killed his wife and sister. Majlis-e-masharawat was threatned with warnings.
On 7th June, Dukhtaran-e-millat Chairperson Aasiya Indrabi called for 'Eid Gah Chalo' to pray for those women who lost their lives. But Police used force to quell women protestors in which nearly 40 womens were injured.
On 8th June, Geelani called for 'Shopian Chalo' but whole valley was kept under siege.
Muslim Khawateen Markaz led by Zamrooda Habib took out processions but were stopped by using extreme force by Police.
On 9th June, Female students from Government Degree College Pulwama marched towards shopian to express their solidity with the bereaved family but reaching Shirmal (4 kms away from Shopian) the peaceful procession was shelled leading to injuries of 25 female students including 16 students that were admitted in District hospital Pulwama out of which 13 were discharged and three female students were kept under observation.
On 10th June, Female students protested at Kashmir University, Government Medical College, Government Womens College and at other colleges and institutions of the valley but were targeted by Tear gas canisters.
On 11th June, Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) led by Abdul Qayoom Wani protested.
On 13th June, Kashmir Bar Association, Kashmir University Staff and others protested.
Post-mortem reports were changed and the cause of death was told as " Both ladies drowned " and the stream which was said as where they drowned was a Nallah at Raimbara, Whose water level was less than a feet.
CBI intervened in the matter but reported the same as they was told by higher authorities.
Indian court also said the cause of death was that both drowned and there was no rape and murder.
Police officers accused in the case were transferred to other districts.
Hurriyat leaders were arrested. Undeclared Curfew was imposed in Shopian for 47 days.
Doctors team from All India Medical Institute Came and exhumed the bodies again and also said that the ladies were drowned.
Dr Nighat and Others were suspended for saying the truth.
Police records closed the case by mentioning it as Natural Accident.
THE BLOOD OF OUR SISTERS WILL NOT GO WASTE. We will continue to fight for justice till our last breath.
